University of Leicester

Job Description

About the role

The Double Walled Isolator (DWI) is a multi-million pound European Space Agency (ESA) project (with international partners) that is being managed by the University of Leicester, SPL team. This new and senior project engineering opportunity will report directly to the Project Manager (PM) and take a system engineering lead in the de novo development of a containment technology to support humanity’s first Mars Sample Return mission.
Building upon our rich, 60+ year heritage of space-science excellence at the University of Leicester, Space Park is a collaborative community of industry, academics and students working together to drive growth in space and space-enabled sectors. We undertake world-leading research with access to state of the art facilities. Our community has been deliberately created to cover innovative upstream engineering and TRL maturation through to the downstream capture, analysis and application of space data. It is this integrated end to end working approach that makes Space Park Leicester unique and the ideal environment to appoint a new systems engineer to support the DWI programme.
We are looking to appoint a senior Systems Engineer to support the DWI project manager and the wider team. This new and exciting role would be ideal for an individual with a naturally professional demeanour and an aptitude for identifying elements of a design and bringing them together.

About you

This role is an ideal opportunity for someone seeking the opportunity to advance their career towards principal engineer or engineering project management (likely, within the space industry), with demonstrated experience in system engineering and ideally, some management expertise. This may include a degree level or equivalent relevant professional qualification with experience in a relevant engineering environment (e.g. Mechanical, Aeronautical, Nuclear, Electrical or Controls). Previous experience leading an engineering/technical project or as part of a larger scale project is also ideal, demonstrating competent working skills using a CAD package, ideally, Siemens NX.

We will also be looking for excellent communication skills, with the ability to give and receive information effectively using a variety of methods and to communicate with a wide range of people including academics, space agency staff, and government officials (UK and abroad).

Due to the nature of the project and external partners involved, you should be willing and able to travel within the EU and US (approx. 6 times per year).

Additional information

Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be directed to John Holt at [email protected].

Applications for job share will be considered.

We anticipate that interviews will take place during the week commencing 17th July 2023.

As part of the University’s ongoing commitment to professional development, this role will also be considered on a seconded basis for existing staff members. Please ensure this is discussed with your line manager prior to applying. More information regarding secondments can be found here.
