Job Purpose

To manage and lead the College Finance Operations Function, ensuring the delivery of service excellence to both internal and external customers whilst delivering exceptional value to enable the College to meet its strategic goals and remain financially sustainable.

This role will be a key contributor to driving forward and embedding a programme of process improvement by challenging the status quo of existing University Finance processes and procedures, delivering business efficiencies and ensuring adherence to financial control frameworks and compliance with University Policy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Lead and manage service delivery of the College Finance Operations Team to ensure a robust and high quality service is delivered. This will involve planning & organising work in the short, medium and long term, ensuring activity and plans align to the Finance strategy.
  2. Develop the skills and capability of the team through effective recruiting, coaching, training and mentoring. Work closely with the Deputy Head of Finance to develop robust succession planning across the department.
  3. Working closely with the Deputy Head of Finance and other members of the College Executive Team to provide guidance and expert analysis on financial inputs which will be used to inform and support delivering the college strategy.
  4. Act as a role model to embed the University values across the College Finance Operations team, creating a positive, efficient and effective team culture delivering a customer-focussed service that is high-performing, effective, flexible and responsive.
  5. Alongside the Deputy Head of Finance, identify, implement, embed and evaluate service & process improvements across local management teams to build and support a culture of continuous improvements.
  6. Responsible for supporting business improvements on an ongoing basis which will involve the enhancement of financial reporting and processes.
  7. Ensure effective internal control systems and governance are in place and adhered to, making sure tools such as review checklists and process flow charts are made available to support business as usual activities.
  8. Responsible for the annual review and sign off of the College Finance Operations Control Framework and standard operations procedural documentation ensuring it remains fit for purpose. Management oversight and responsibility for annual sign off of the Finance Operations Delegation of Financial Authority Records.
  9. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance knowledge and skills.
  10. Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by management.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

  • A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles, or, Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
  • A2 Qualified or working towards qualification with a recognised CCAB accounting professional body.
  • A3 Comprehensive knowledge of business processes, management information systems and value drivers of finance operations.
  • A4 Knowledge of Microsoft Office Packages

  • B1 Knowledge of Agresso Business World Financial System
Skills

Essential

  • C1 Highly effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to challenge assumptions and practices with diplomacy.
  • C2 An ability to demystify complex financial concepts for non-financial colleagues.
  • C3 Resilient and durable, able to maintain momentum in the face of ambiguity, uncertainty obstacles and setbacks.
  • C4 An ability to prioritise and juggle competing demands from a variety of stakeholders.
  • C5 Proficient in using Microsoft Office Packages (i.e. word, excel, software packages).
  • C6 Demonstrable skill of analytical tools within a complex environment
  • C7 Ability and knowledge to structure and develop plans to exploit business opportunities
Experience

Essential:

  • E1 Previous finance operations experience within a large, complex organisation and qualified or working towards CCAB standard.
  • E2 Experience of managing and developing people and teams
  • E3 Experience of working with and influencing senior management
  • E4 Experience of working to tight deadlines and service level agreements
Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, ยฃ40,247 – ยฃ45,163 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended. Relocation assistant will be provided where appropriate.
