Job summary

We are excited to invite applications for a Locum Consultant in Critical Care Medicine at The Queen Elizabeth hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

Applications are invited from eligible candidates who hold a CCT or equivalent in Intensive Care. We encourage those with both single and dual CCTs to apply for this post. There are potential sessions available within the regional transfer service (ACCOTS) for those that have a particular interest in transfer medicine.

You will join a dynamic, dedicated and enthusiastic team of consultants and nursing staff, supported by doctors in training, 24/7 Critical Care outreach teams and experienced Advanced Critical Care Practitioners.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The core component of this post is to provide general critical care cover across the QE Critical Care unit. The post holder must understand the significant ongoing changes in the Trust’s services and be prepared to take an active part in the change program.

A standard full time job plan will contain 10 programmed activities. A programmed activity will normally have a timetable value of 4 hours and a full-time consultant.

will normally devote 9 programmed activities to direct clinical care. The remaining programmed activities will be devoted to supporting professional activities. The successful candidate will be invited to discuss these options with the Clinical Service Lead on appointment.

About US

The Critical Care Unit at QEHB is one of the largest single site critical care units in Europe. It is a mixed Level 2 and Level 3 facility (HDU and ITU), currently open to 67 ITU equivalent beds, or up to 80 patients, and admitting over 4000 patients per year. There are 42 Consultant Intensivists, over 450 nursing staff and Advanced Critical Care Practitioners, supported by allied health professionals and medical staff in training from anaesthetics, intensive care medicine and medical specialities. QEHB has a large solid organ transplantation programme including the largest liver transplantation programme in the UK, kidney, heart, lung and bone marrow transplantation. The Trust has recently gained accreditation to deliver CAR-T cell therapy for haematological malignancies.

It is a tertiary centre for hepatobiliary, pancreatic, upper gastrointestinal and sarcoma surgery and a regional referral centre for neurosurgery and neurosciences. QEHB is a Major Trauma Centre and a regional Burns centre, and hosts the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine. We also deliver an elective cardiac surgery programme and we are a tertiary referral unit for emergency cardiac surgical patients, including those requiring cardiac mechanical device support.

EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE

  • Broad based experience in critical care including having worked in a major trauma centre.
  • Experience of working in a dedicated neuro-intensive care unit
  • Experience of working in the NHS

  • Able to communicate in English at a professional/academic level
  • Understanding of the NHS and NHS management

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or recognised equivalent
  • Higher specialist training in ICM or equivalent
  • FICM examination or equivalent
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register
