Job Overview:
The Operations Manager will be responsible for managing UHB Tissue Services, supporting clinical users with stock management for human transplant and ensuring compliance with the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) regulations for human application. The role involves overseeing the procurement, testing, storage, and distribution of a wide range of tissue and cell types used in clinical transplantation, including skin, bone, tendons, stem cells, and more. This position is within the Cellular Pathology department and will require the post-holder to lead a team, including managing the Mortuary Quality Lead and ensuring high standards of dignified care for deceased patients.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management: Lead Tissue Services staff and manage the Band 7 Mortuary Quality Lead, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and high-quality standards.
Compliance & Regulation: Ensure adherence to HTA compliance for Human Applications, supporting the Trust’s HTA Designated Individual and working closely with Governance on audits, risk management, and regulatory visits.
Resource Management: Manage finance budgets, stock levels, and storage conditions for human tissue in compliance with clinical and HTA requirements.
Project Management: Contribute to major projects, such as implementing new IT systems, digital pathology, and validating new supplier equipment.
Clinical Support & Training: Provide technical and scientific advice to clinical staff, including consultants and surgical teams in areas such as burns, theatres, and haematology.
Qualifications & Experience:
Essential:
BSc in a relevant field or equivalent work experience
MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent, ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)
Management qualification
Substantial experience in a Band 7 or equivalent role with leadership and project management experience
In-depth knowledge of HTA legislation for Human Application, fault finding, troubleshooting, and quality assurance practices
Desirable:
Advanced training and specialist knowledge in related disciplines
Experience with compliance audits, root cause analysis, and quality control
Skills & Attributes:
Effective communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
Ability to manage competing demands, handle complex decisions under pressure, and solve problems effectively
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external suppliers
