Job Purpose
The School of Health and Wellbeing is home to our Electrocardiology Core Laboratory, based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where we continue to develop software currently used to interpret over 25 million electrocardiograms (ECGs) each year worldwide. New uses of the ECG are emerging based on the use of artificial intelligence techniques. The Glasgow team needs to keep abreast of such advances, which means expanding the team involved in software development.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Software Development Support Officer to join the Software Development Group where you will be able to use your experience of programming in a high level language to assist in the enhancement of our world leading software.
You will have knowledge of Windows or Linux operating systems and your experience of programming could come from your College/ University course or from a previous similar role. In return, we will offer you opportunities to enhance your knowledge of software development on a range of platforms as well as contributing to research in the field, particularly in relation to Machine Learning. You will also have the rare opportunity to assist with the preparation of publications and interacting with leading industry partners You will also gain an understanding of the recording and interpretation of ECGs.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Make a leading contribution to the further development and enhancement of software for automated interpretation of ECGs, with an emphasis on using Machine Learning tools for ECG classification.
- Using specialist expertise, independently maintain, test, evaluate and debug program code to verify accuracy and completeness and to ensure system operating proficiency, or to adapt programs to new requirements.
- Undertake detailed specialist quantitative and qualitative analysis and interpretation of experimental results related to automated ECG interpretation.
- Assist with preparation of results of ECG analyses, based on newer methods, for inclusion in scientific publications.
- Review systems and processes in selected aspects of automated ECG interpretation, analyse areas for improvement and recommend revised diagnostic approaches where required.
- Be responsible for keeping abreast of the use of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in automated ECG interpretation and hence for advising other team members of developments in this area.
- Work with immediate colleagues and, if appropriate, external parties in other Schools within the University to develop novel software to facilitate further experimentation in diagnostic methods.
- Assist with the preparation of documentation in relation to compliance with IEC 62304.
- Participate in the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System used by the Group.
- Take a significant role in the process of auditing and being audited in compliance with the Quality Management System.
- Contribute to the overall IT team culture, including a significant role with creation, development and review of SOPs where relevant.
- Liaise with non-IT colleagues where appropriate, e.g. to discuss potential system improvements and to ensure compliance with technical and professional standards.
- Assist in the building of databases of selected ECG abnormalities in order to facilitate the development of new ECG diagnostic criteria.
- Become familiar with University IT regulations.
- Undertake a variety of tasks as required by the Software Development Manager.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
- A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4)in mathematics, computing science or a science related subject.
- A2 Extensive knowledge of a high level programming language, e.g. C, C++ as well as Linux and Windows OS
Desirable
- B1 An understanding of signal processing, ideally include concepts related to filtering
- B2 Knowledge of database design and use
- B3 Knowledge of web based applications, development software and methodologies
- B4 Basic knowledge of Machine Learning methods for diagnostic use

- C1 Ability to work under pressure while maintaining high professional standards

Experience
Essential
- E1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role
- E2 Relevant experience of development of software, ideally in a language such as C
- E3 Experience of writing software user documentation and providing user training
Desirable
- F1 Familiarity with source code control systems and change management systems
- F2 Completion of a research project, perhaps as part of an undergraduate degree
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, ยฃ39,347 – ยฃ44,263 per annum.
This post is full time and open ended. Relocation assistance will be provided where appropriate.
