Job Overview:

The role of Training Programme Director (TPD) is to lead and support the delivery of high-quality educational functions within the specialty of cardiothoracic surgery. This role is aligned with the NHS England mandate and includes the recruitment, training, and development of trainees in the cardiothoracic field, ensuring that their curriculum requirements are met in a high-quality learning environment. The TPD works with the Postgraduate Dean and is responsible for coordinating the delivery of teaching programs, monitoring trainee progress, providing career guidance, and addressing trainees in difficulty. The role is part-time, requiring 0.5 sessions per week (2 hours per session).

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the delivery of cardiothoracic training programs, ensuring that all trainees receive equitable access to educational opportunities.

Oversee recruitment and placement of trainees within Local Education Providers.

Assess trainee progress, ensuring that curriculum requirements are met and provide additional support for those struggling.

Develop and manage teaching and training programs to enhance curriculum delivery.

Provide career guidance and advice to trainees.

Ensure compliance with GMC and Royal College of Surgeons standards for training.

Support quality improvement initiatives in training and healthcare delivery.

Engage with workforce planning, contributing to the development of the cardiothoracic workforce in line with national needs.

Oversee the Specialty Training Committee and engage in financial planning and budgeting for the program.

Qualifications:

Essential:

Membership or Fellowship of a relevant professional body (e.g., Royal College).

Primary clinical healthcare qualification.

Attendance at courses focused on educational development.

Desirable:

Educational qualifications such as a postgraduate certificate, diploma, or masterโ€™s in medical education.

Experience:

Essential:

Extensive experience in clinical education and training, particularly with doctors in training.

Leadership experience in clinical and educational settings.

Desirable:

Previous experience as a leader in healthcare education.

Familiarity with current health, social care, and education policy.

Skills:

Demonstrable leadership and motivational skills.

Ability to work collaboratively and establish credibility quickly with stakeholders.

Strong personal development focus and a commitment to helping others progress.

Salary:

Salary paid in line with TPD sessional payments.

Visa Sponsorship:

Yes, NHS England holds a sponsor license and may be able to sponsor the successful candidate through the Skilled Worker route, provided they meet the Home Office requirements. Typically, this requires a salary of at least ยฃ38,700 per year or the “going rate” for the job.
