Position: Blood Sciences Team Manager (Band 7)

Location: West Cumberland Hospital, North Cumbria

Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

The Blood Sciences Team Manager plays a pivotal role in ensuring the delivery of a comprehensive healthcare service to North Cumbria Hospitals and the community. Working within the Blood Sciences department, the Manager oversees the efficient operation, quality control, and scientific provision of designated laboratory sections. This includes coordinating and monitoring rotating staff and deputizing for the operational manager when necessary. The department operates 24/7 to provide core analyses, process urgent requests, and conduct specialized tests, with out-of-hours cover arranged through extended working arrangements, on-call duties, or shift patterns as dictated by workload urgency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day operations, ensuring quality, efficiency, and scientific excellence.
  • Coordinate and monitor rotating staff, providing guidance and support.
  • Deputize for the operational manager in their absence.
  • Ensure adherence to Trust Values and departmental policies.

Job Description

Qualifications:

  • Essential: BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent, MSc in Healthcare Science or equivalent, HCPC registration.
  • Desirable: Essential IT skills (EITS) or equivalent, Foundation Management Certificate or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Essential: Staff supervision within an NHS laboratory, extensive relevant technical/clinical experience, familiarity with quality, finance, staffing, and risk assessment policies and procedures.
  • Desirable: Audit experience.

Knowledge:

  • Essential: Continuing professional development, specialist knowledge in area of practice, familiarity with complex analytical and stock management systems, EQA and IQA procedures.
  • Desirable: Equality impact assessment, quality management, UKAS standards.

Skills:

  • Essential: Technical competence, effective communication, leadership, ability to use IT systems, good hand-eye coordination, ability to organize and motivate teams, ability to instigate corrective actions and evaluate training.
  • Desirable: Complex statistical analysis, familiarity with Trust and departmental health & safety procedures.

Other Requirements:

  • Essential: Flexible approach to working patterns, ability to travel independently between hospital sites, commitment to CPD.
  • Desirable: Driving license.
