Job Summary
We have an opportunity for a professional driver to join RAF Boulmer’s Mechanical Transport (MT) Flight. The vacancy is for a Skill Zone 3 Civilian Driver who will be involved in a variety of tasks providing essential passenger and freight transport support to RAF Boulmer and its associated Units such as the RAF’s Remote Radar Heads. RAF Boulmer is a key part of the Air Command and Control Force, providing surveillance of UK airspace and tactical control of combat and support aircraft.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
The successful candidate will be responsible to the Mechanical Transport Officer for:
- Conducting daily driving duties around RAF Boulmer such as passenger transport for shift changes as well as delivery of mail and medical samples.
- Conducting passenger transport to public transport departure points such as train stations and airports.
- Conducting passenger and freight transport to and from other RAF Stations.
- Conducting all other driving taskings as directed by MT Control.
- Ensuring all vehicle inspections are carried out and all associated paperwork related to the vehicle is in order.
- Ensuring the general cleanliness and serviceability of all vehicles and work spaces as well as ensuring all vehicle defects and incidents are reported in a timely manner.
- These tasks are not exhaustive, and you may be required to undertake other tasks within the remit of your grade and qualifications.
- Conduct VIP duties ensuring high standards of dress and deportment.
Person specification
Civilian drivers operate within a 24-hour, 7-days a week shift pattern conducting a shift cycle on a rotation of 2-day shifts, 2-night shifts followed by 4 days off. Contracted to a minimum of 37 hours a week over a 8-week shift cycle.
As a customer facing role, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required to be able to interact professionally with a range of people from across the RAF Boulmer Area of Responsibility (AOR). The successful applicant will be expected to be a team player who can build trust-based relationships and work closely within a close-knit team. A proactive and adaptable attitude is essential to ensure that all driving and administrative tasks required of them are completed to a high standard to ensure the smooth running of MT. You must also demonstrate a self-motivated, flexible approach with an ability to prioritise work and manage resources effectively. During evenings and weekends you will be expected to work unsupervised, and at times on your own, and be able to respond to last minute customer requests.

The successful applicant will be expected to pass a Civil Service medical and a driving assessment before being offered the job. All applicants are required to hold the following qualifications of Cat B, D1, D, C and C+E driving licenses, with an ADR licence being a desirable qualification.
