VACANCY STATUS: FULL TIME
JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director, Regional Laboratory Services and Medical Director/Chief of Laboratory Services, this position is primarily responsible for providing medical and scientific expertise for Biochemistry and Point of Care Program for the Integrated Hospital Laboratory Service. This includes medical consultations, selection of equipment, and assessment of quality, methods validations, implementations & development, establishing reference ranges, and education of staff.
The Integrated Hospital Laboratory Service provide onsite testing at Windsor Regional Hospital and Erie Shores Healthcare and supports all hospital programs in the region, including Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare
It is expected that the Clinical Biochemist will be and effective member of the Integrated Hospital Laboratories Service Leadership Team which includes the WRH Site Laboratory Manager, the ESHC Site Laboratory Manager, Supervisors, Quality Management Specialist, the Regional Director and the Medical Director.
The Clinical Biochemist role includes both professional and administrative components and will require cooperation, collaboration and coordination of service with hospital stakeholders.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides direction and clinical leadership for laboratory services.
Provides clinical expertise, specialized knowledge and trouble shooting in the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of Biochemistry and Point-of-care Testing.
Collaborates with operational leaders with results reporting, planning, evaluating etc.
Works with other colleague professionals (e.g. physicians) to drive appropriate use of laboratory services including: creation and dissemination of testing algorithms and clinical pathways.
Educates physicians of the features and limitations of each test.
Participates in clinical rounds for open discussion with the clinical staff as required
Presents in-service for laboratory staff, nurses and physicians
Educates laboratory staff on all analytical and clinical aspects of biochemical tests
Ensures compliance with Laboratory requirements.
Responsible for overseeing the quality assurance/control program including procedures and documentation in Biochemistry and Point of Care Program.
Provides advice and consultation to health care professionals on utilization, selection of appropriate tests and interpretation of results to aid in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of patients.
Reviews on an ongoing basis the utilization of Biochemistry testing and communicates to the Medical Director and Regional Laboratory Director, the inappropriate ordering of Biochemistry tests based on clinical justification and current best practices.
Reviews literature regularly and stays aware of scientific and industry trends and opportunities for improvement
Expected to attend provincial, national or international scientific meetings/conferences in the field of health care/ laboratory medicine.
Monitors laboratory performance through participation in external quality control/quality assurance programs.
Responsible for timely reporting of serum/urine protein electrophoresis, crystals in body fluids and special tests and procedures as may occur in the discipline of Biochemistry.
Responsible for proposing, evaluating and implementing new instruments, methods and technology in the discipline of Biochemistry in collaboration with the Lab Manager, Supervisor and technical staff.
Supports operational leaders to ensure that work in Biochemistry is carried out efficiently, accurately, cost effectively and meets departmental TAT targets.
Provides clinical guidance and scientific advice to the Lab Managers, Supervisors, Lead Technologists and other technical personnel in Biochemistry and Point of Care.
Provides statistical data and reports as requested by the Medical and Administrative or Lab Manager.
Communicates regularly with the Lab Managers, Supervisors and Lead Technologists with regards to unusual occurrences, incident management and work flow issues in Biochemistry/Core Lab.
Interacts with equipment suppliers for problem resolution
Participates in strategic planning and SOP development as needed.
Participates in the capital equipment, operational budget planning and planning exercises as needed.
Maintains continued education requirements through professional associations and other national and provincial organizations

QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD degree and be certified (or eligible for certification) in clinical chemistry by the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (CACB) and/or the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC).
Experience or training in routine biochemistry, special chemistry, automation, point of care testing and other leading edge methodologies in biochemical diagnostics
