Overview

We are seeking an experienced engineer with a proven track record in optoelectronic component assembly technologies/optical fibre splicing, who will join our team developing advanced solutions for the development and deployment of high-reliability optical components supporting Microsoft’s CoreSmartTM Hollow-core fiber products.

 

Based in Romsey, UK, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of design, fabrication, test and reliability engineers. Additionally, you will work alongside globally distributed network design and system engineering teams, collectively driving the growth and advancement of this exciting new technology in various markets and applications.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Optical Science / Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Physics, or related technical discipline
  • Relevant years’ work experience in optical/optoelectronic component manufacturing technologies in a manufacturing environment

  • Good numerical, logical, organizational, planning and analytical skills
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, C, C++

Background check requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government screening requirements are required for this role.  These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized screenings:

 

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter

Responsibilities

 

  • Contributing to both internal and external R&D/engineering projects aimed at improving Microsoft’s product lines in the optical systems domain
  • Collaborating with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for optical components and technologies
  • Driving the identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for component technology manufacturing and deployment
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of fibre processing and characterization methods to optimise fibre connectivity, cleaving and mode adaptation for special optical fibres
  • Working with internal and external parties to develop and transfer process technology from early stage concept to a system validated for use in manufacturing and/or field deployment environments
  • Proactively seeking new knowledge and adapting to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, useability, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale
  • Visibly supporting the establishment and maintenance of a safe work environment
