Sopra Steria’s Aerospace and Defence division works on a number of projects aimed at improving people’s ability to access digital information and services. We are looking for a Lead Database Administrator to join our team on a new project delivering essential support services to the UK’s Armed Forces.

As our new Lead Database Administrator (LDA) will be responsible for the end-to-end design, implementation, configuration, maintenance and performance of a new business critical SQL-based database services.

This is a “hands-on” office-based position in Hemel Hempstead, requiring solid technical, as well as excellent interpersonal and communications skills.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Responsible for designing greenfield database services based upon Microsoft SQL Enterprise and Standard editions
  • Produce and maintain design artifacts, such as but not limited to Low-Level Designs, Release Notes, database service related fail-over / disaster recovery instruction
  • Document new procedures and review/update as required thought the delivery
  • Be the main point of contact (PoC) for all MS SQL related matter
  • Manage SQL Server databases through multiple product life-cycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems
  • Share technical expertise, providing technical mentorship and cross-training to other peers and team members
  • Independently analyse, solve and correct issues; performing problem resolution end-to-end; providing feedback using Client provided service management tools

What you’ll bring:

  • Experience as a SQL Database Administrator
  • Vocational/Diploma/Associate Degree (technical field) or relevant Microsoft certification (MCTS, MCITP and /or MVP Certified)
  • Expertise in multi-site Always-On High Availability Groups (HAG) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server
  • Expertise in database encryption techniques, such as but not limited to Transparent Data Encryption (TDE)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Fail-Over clusters
  • Experience with database backup, restores and recovery models
  • Experience of creating and modifying Transact-SQL (TSQL) scripts
  • A working Knowledge of PowerShell scripting
  • Experience of SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • Experience of working with Microsoft Windows Server operating systems including but not limited to Server 2019 or later
  • Have a working knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory (AD) and AD group policies

It would be great if you had:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server analysis Services (SSAS)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
  • Knowledge of PowerShell Desired State Configuration (DSC)
  • Experience of Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM)
  • Experience of Microsoft System Centre Operations Manager (SCOM)
  • Understanding of the SQL Server storage requirements
